Teachers' pension tutorial: Friends and family “wish they had a guaranteed ...

Here's a new tutorial posted on the state Teachers' Retirement System touting the benefits of the retirement system for about about 149,000 retirees and 277,000 active members.

The average teacher pension in the system was $38,238 in 2011.

The video touts the benefits of having a guaranteed income in retirement.

"You'll have a guaranteed pension for life. The guarantee is something you're working toward," the narrator says. "But once you're eligible, don't take this benefit for granted. Why? Ask your friends and family and most will tell you they wish they had a guaranteed income throughout retirement."

The pension system has been strained in recent years as more teachers retire and returns on investment struggled. Last month, the system said it would raise pension costs for schools by 37 percent in 2014.
