How To Profit When You Speak

Public speaking is a great way to promote your company and get new customers and sales. And there are many venues in which you can speak, ranging from trade shows to local business meetings. The biggest challenge I've seen though is how to effectively close new sales from these speaking engagements.

Below are three tips to follow to solve this:

1. Provide Great Content

Nobody wants to be pitched; at least at first. What I mean by this is that you must start any presentation with quality content. Provide information that's useful and informative to attendees. Teach them something that benefits them. Doing so earns you credibility and the right to promote a product or service later in the presentation that also fulfills their unmet needs.

Perhaps the best in the business at doing this is Dustin Mathews and Dave VanHoose, the co-founders of Speaking Empire, an organization that teaches speakers how to generate more sales.

Their mantra is providing "useful, but incomplete information." For example, maybe you tell the audience there are 7 tips to doing something. In your presentation, you reveal four of these tips, with the other 3 reserved for those who purchase your offering. In this case, you provide great value, but retain the full value for clients only.

2. Have a Scripted, Highly Visual Presentation

When you speak, you should be scripted. While you don't need to have every word memorized, you should at least follow a set outline and cover set information. In addition, you should have slides that support what you're saying. Importantly, these slides should be highly visual, and not include tons of text - you want the audience to focus on you, not to read your slides.

Organizations like Speaking Empire are also great at scripting speakers and developing visually stimulating presentations that prompt audience members to buy. This is extremely important, so don't skimp on your presentation.

3. Have a Call To Action

If audience members are interested in learning more about your offerings or your company, what should they do? In most cases, the speaker forgets to guide the audience by giving them a "call to action."

Calls to action could be for audience members to complete a form, to call a number, to send you an email, to text a certain number, etc. If your goal is to collect leads, and not sell during the presentation, a great idea is to tell audience members to email you and that you will reply with a copy of your presentation or a report with related content.

Speaking is a great way to gain credibility and new customers. The first step is to find an audience which mainly consists of your target customers. Then, when you speak, make sure to educate them, wow them, and give them precise directions regarding how to reach you and/or buy from your company.
