Dating website owner Sarah Beeney: 9 tips on avoiding a clichéd Valentine's Day
Let Sarah Beeney, owner of dating website My Single Friend, help you steer clear of a cringey, nauseating February 14.
1. Cook at home.
Buy ingredients for something you've never cooked together before. If you've never cooked your partner's favourite starter or main course, today is the time to try.
Commercialism and romance aren't massively good partners. It's better to make your partner biscuits that they like. Time is a nicer gift than buying some s***ty crap - can I say that? Think about making something rather than buying something.
Restaurant prices are hiked massively on Valentine's Day and you just end up sitting there surrounded by other couples feeling equally awkward.
It's more romantic to be cosy than swanky. A nice pub with a B'n'B on top is more romantic than spending lots of money on somewhere posh.
It's absolutely the one day of the year to avoid it. It's painfully predictable and therefore utterly unromantic.
Expecting a sports car on a truck is unreasonable. You'll be disappointed and they'll feel inadequate.
And you won't have to talk about the things people think they should talk about such as the L word. Avoid this at all costs on Valentine's Day - it's really cringy and a little bit revolting.
Equally, if something they do bugs you, avoid complaining about it. It may kickstart an ongoing nag-free period in your relationship. Learn to be more tolerant - it is one of the nicest things you can do.
Adopt the attitude 'Up yours Valentine's! I'm going to have fun' and go out with your friends. After all, it's a prime pulling night...
